Idaho Murders: Bryan Kohberger Motive, More Unanswered Questions
Bryan Kohberger Perhaps behind bars for the rest of his life, but there are still various unanswered questions about the reasons why he killed four students from the Idaho University.
Kohberger burst into Moscow’s home, Idaho, at 1122 King Road on November 13, 2022 and stabbed Ethan Chapin,, Xana Kernodle,, Mad And Kaylee Goncalves To death with a Ka-Bar knife. He was arrested just over a month later and initially pleaded not guilty.
The former doctoral student appeared in court in July 2025 – a month before the start of his trial – and changed his plea. Kohberger pleaded guilty to four accusations of first degree murder and a criminal burglary chief in an agreement that took the possibility of the death penalty. He was sentenced to life imprisonment Without the possibility of parole later this same month.
Kohberger remained silent throughout the case, even refusing to address the families of his victims during his condemnation hearing.
After Kohberger was officially sentenced, the order of gag on the main actors of the case was lifted – many having started to express themselves. The Moscow Police Service also released more than 300 documents concerning their investigation.

Why did Kohberger do it?
The biggest question surrounding the murders of Idaho is the reason. Kohberger did not explain at all why he broke into the King Road house in November 2022 and stabbed the four victims. Even the police have no idea of the reason for its actions.
Investigators at the top of the case, the Idaho State police Lieutenant Darren Gilbertson and the Moscow police Corporal Brett Paynewere questioned at a press conference in July 2025 if they had a clear reason. “We don’t do it,” they replied.
Who Kohberger killed 1st?
It was largely supposed that Kohberger entered the house and immediately went to the third floor – where the rooms of Mogen and Goncalves were. Prosecutors also hypothesized that Mogen or Goncalves was the planned target of Kohberger.

Has Kohberger follow Kaylee?
The documents published by the Moscow Police Service revealed that Goncalves’ friends saying that she had a “stalker”. Goncalves apparently thought that someone followed her, and her friends recalled an incident where she claimed to have seen an “unknown man above their house in the south who looked at her”.
Where is the weapon of murder?
The Ka-Bar knife that Kohberger used to assassinate the four students has not yet been recovered.
Was there a 2nd murder weapon?
Goncalves’ sister alleged that Kohbeger had used a second weapon when the victim’s impact declaration during his condemnation hearing. However, this has not yet been confirmed.
“There were wounds that seemed to have been caused by something other than the knife, although it could have been the knife”, the county of Latah Prosecutor Bill Thompson shared in an interview in July 2025 with Idaho’s statesman. “I don’t think we can exclude the possibility that there is an additional weapon involved.”
Why did Kohberger plead guilty?
Kohberger has not spoken at all since his arrest. It seems that his change of plea has to do with the death penalty – which was removed from the table in its advocacy agreement. Thompson confirmed in the same interview in July 2025 that his team would have asked for the death penalty if the case had been tried.
“It was certainly a case where the death penalty was appropriate,” he said. “If we ended up going through a trial in a sanction phase, I think that by virtue of the law, he met the elements.”
