Diogo Jota Dead at 28 in Car Crash Weeks After Wedding
Portuguese football player Diogo Jota and his brother, André Silvawere killed in a car accident in Zamora, Spain, in the early hours of Thursday, July 3. They were 28 and 25 respectively.
Jota had just married her longtime partner, Rate CardosoLess than two weeks before.
“The information we have so far is that the car, which was a Lamborghini, was in a traffic accident and left the road due to an eruption of the tires during the overtaking,” said the Guardia Civil BBC News. “It was in the early hours, 00:30 BST, in the municipality of Cernadilla in the province of Zamora.”
“The car caught fire and the two occupants were killed,” said local police forces, confirming the identity of the two people as Jota and Silva.

The football team said in a press release via their website“Liverpool Football Club is devastated by the tragic death of Diogo Jota. The club was informed that the 28 -year -old died following a traffic accident in Spain with his brother, Andre.”
“The Liverpool FC will no longer comment at the moment and will ask for the privacy of Diogo and the family, friends, teammates and staff of the teammates and clubs in Andre, while they are trying to reconcile with an unimaginable loss. We will continue to provide them with our full support,” said the press release.
Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro said in a press release via X“The news of the death of Diogo Jota, an athlete who greatly honored the name of Portugal, and his brother is unexpected and tragic. I lie down my biggest condolences to their family. It is a sad day for football and for national and international sport.”
In a statement to the BBC, president of the Portuguese Football Federation Pedro Proenca said: “The Portuguese Football Federation and all Portuguese football are completely devastated by the death of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, this morning, in Spain.”
“Much more than an incredible player, with nearly 50 international appearances for the national team, Diogo Jota was an extraordinary person, someone with infectious joy and a reference in the community itself,” continued Proenca. “On my behalf, and on behalf of the Portuguese Football Federation, I express my biggest condolences to the family and friends of Diogo and Andre Silva, as well as the Liverpool FC and FC Penafiel, the clubs where, respectively, they played their football.”
“The loss of Diogo and Andre represent irreplaceable losses for Portuguese football and we will do everything, daily, to honor their inheritance,” he added.
Jota made the knot with Cardoso, with whom he has three young children, June 22, sharing photos of their wedding day via social media at the time.
