Squid Game Season 3’s Alternate Gi-Hun Ending (And Why It Changed)
Season 3 of the game “Squid Game” concluded the series on a rather dark note. Not only did the detective Jun-Ho never managed to close the matches (or even make a breach in the operation), but the games themselves ended badly for 99.56% of the players involved. Of the 456 people who participated in the game, only two survived. One was the player 256 (who was discreet by the sympathetic goalkeeper Kang No-Eul) and the other was the 222 player, a pretty baby CGI. Even our main gi-hun character (Lee Jung-Jae) died at the end. He sacrificed himself to save the life of 222, throwing himself from a edge after a season full of pain.
It’s a dark finish, but it was not always the plan of writers for Gi-Hun. As a Hwang Dong-Hyuk showrunner explained in a recent interviewHe originally thought of keeping Gi-Hun alive throughout the series. This does not necessarily mean, however, that Dong-Hyuk provided that Gi-Hun launches a poor baby 222 on this giant triangle. As he explained:
“I thought of having gi-hun live. I thought of an end where Gi-Hun would come out of the game in one way or another, and he would go to America to see his daughter. But in the process of writing, I had a change of heart. I thought what story I wanted to tell the show? Too, I looked at what was going on in the world at the time and how there was less humanity.
The finish can be dark, but Hwang Dong-Hyuk found the light in
While fans certainly wanted Gi-Hun to survive the games in one piece, Dong-Hyuk finds his fate inspiring. Not only is the last act of Gi-Hun is a nobleman, but his sacrifice has a positive impact on the life of several people around him. Even These boring VIPs seems moved by his decision; This forces them to think (at least a moment) about their own depravity, and for once, none seems to have nothing to say.
Kang No-Eul is particularly moved by the choice of Gi-Hun. She is about to put an end to her own life until she sees him sacrificing herself, and that is what inspires her to continue living. Dong-Hyuk noted that No-Eul (whose name represents “Dusk”) is someone who was stuck to live with “deep sadness and guilt that she could not save her baby”. She redeems by Saving Player 246, but it is only by the death of Gi-Hun that she is ready to revive the hope that her own child could still be alive in North Korea.
“I wanted her to be someone who goes beyond what’s going on to twilight and starts dreaming again of a new day,” said Dong-Hyuk. He added:
“Symbolism behind children [in the show]It is not only a question of the biological child of a character, but I wanted it to symbolize any type of hope that we could have for the future as well as our desire to live. … I wanted to portray this message where all these characters and whoever looks dream of dreaming of what will happen in the future. “”
By sacrificing himself, Gi-Hun won the moral battle against in-ho
Dong-Hyuk noted that in-ho, the front front of the game, was also moved by the last moments of Gi-Hun. He and Gi-Hun have spent the last two seasons locked in a battle of ideologies. Optimist Gi-Hun believes that people are worth protected, while the bitter and hardened inho believes that humans are intrinsically monstrous and selfish.
Throughout the majority of season 3 of “squid game”, it seems that we have been proven. The rebellion of Gi-Hun collapses, all the other players end up killing themselves, and even the own father of the baby 222 is ready to throw it from a cliff if it means saving its own skin. But Gi-Hun obtains the last word by sacrificing itself. He refuses to take the easy and selfish road that in-ho took Survive your own time in games. As Dong-Hyuk said:
“By sacrificing themselves, the actions of Gi-Hun definitely touched something in the heart of in-ho, perhaps a very small ribbon of hope that he had hidden at the bottom of his heart. I also think that it may have triggered a certain shame in him, because that [sacrifice] was something he couldn’t do for himself. The play arena in Korea being completely ruined and seeing this baby who came out of the game, there was a huge change within the man of the front, and I think it was triggered and caused by the actions of Gi-Hun. I wanted this to be what the public also feels. “”
