Tom Hardy Nearly Starred In Both The Worst And Best DCEU Movies
He is sure to say that Tom Hardy has had a whole career. Since its realization of feature films in “Black Hawk Down” by Ridley Scott in 2001, it appeared in films that run the range of gender and scale: smaller dramas focused on characters like “Warrior” and “Locke” to some of the most ambitious blockbusters of the 2010s, including “Inception” and “Mad Max: Fury Road”. Hardy’s curriculum vitae presents his talents as a interpreter who has looks and sensitivities of the leading man, but to his heart is an impatient character actor who pursues a wide variety of roles.

Like many of his contemporaries, Tom Hardy brought his talents to the superhero cinema. With his dynamite work as a bane in “The Dark Knight Rises” and The crazy Zanness, of the wall he presented as the star of the “Venom” trilogy, Hardy is in this special group of actors who appeared in films based on both DC and Marvel Comics. Interestingly, there was a moment when Hardy had to bring his talents to the extended universe of DC (DCEU), but he abandoned this particular project. If he had ended up accepting this role, he would have played in the worst DCEU film, and his best.
Tom Hardy was initially interpreted as Rick Flag in Suicide Squad
In December 2014, Warner Bros. Pictures announced the initial casting For what would become the third entry of the DCEU, “Suicide Squad”. Will Smith, Tom Hardy, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney and Cara Delevingne were the first six confirmed actors for the film directed by David Ayer. Hardy was to play Rick Flag, a colonel of the United States Special Forces who heads the Black Ops team (officially appointed Force X). The film would have been the second Hardy DC film, after its performance as a bane in “The Dark Knight Rises”, and would have been completely a gap of this role. Rather than playing the main bad guy, he would have been the only unambiguous hero in the supervisor group he supervises. Hardy’s idea with an A-Lister like Smith and an coming like Robbie was also quite attractive.

Eventually, Tom Hardy abandoned “Suicide Squad” Due to conflict planning with “the ghost”. He was replaced by Joel Kinnaman, whose most notable film credit at the time was like Alex Murphy in the remake of “Robocop” 2014. Hardy was disappointed to leave production, citing his initial excitation for the script during a press conference for “Mad Max: Fury Road” in 2015 (via 2015 (via 2015 (via 2015 ( Collider):
“Warner Bros. is my home studio and I like them so I was really disappointed. I wanted to work on this and I know that the script is really f ****** ally And I also know what will happen with the Joker and Harley Quinn in it; I will not give too much … it is an ally F *******. And all this territory is something that I would certainly do it – I mean, everyone likes Joker … Will Smith is a guy dope, but everyone loves the Joker and that’s okay, I think, a very important film for fans. “”

Despite his disappointment, Tom Hardy wished to replace his Rick flag, Joel Kinnaman good luck:
“Literally, we wrapped in Calgary for the moment until we returned in July. It would have broken the two, I would have had a beard. It would simply not happen, so I had my ass technically out of suicide Squad ”, eviscerated, so I had to put it back to Joel Kinnaman, who will do an incredible job.
Tom Hardy dodged a ball, but missed in the long term
In August 2016, “Suicide Squad” opened its doors in theaters. Warner Bros. hoped that it would be an essential step in the right direction for the DCEU, according to the shellacking that “Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice” received earlier that year. Although the “Batman V Superman” theatrical cup was critical and polarized at least at least, it had at least a segment of hardcore fans that defended it, with the three -hour Red “Ultimate Edition” offering a more coherent and complete film of what director Zack Snyder has intended. The same cannot be said of the theatrical cut of “suicide squad”, which Director David Ayer has publicly denied.

In a film filled with arcs of incoherent and underdeveloped characters, including two notoriously bad turns of the enchanting of the wicked (Cara Delevingne) and the worst joker in cinematographic history (Jared Leto), Rick Flag exists. Joel Kinnaman does not bring much to a character with very little to do, and whose main connection with the story is that his girlfriend becomes the villain. No lack of respect for Kinnaman, who has since proven himself as a remarkable actor, but at the time of production and the release of this film, there was less a draw, while Hardy was a quantity known in the industry. In the end, Hardy’s talents would probably have been wasted in “Suicide Squad” also, and then marked an Oscar nomination for his performance in “The Revenant”.

Fortunately for Joel Kinnaman, he had a second chance to play Rick Flag in “The Suicide Squad” by James Gunn. This film was an autonomous sequence and a gentle restart of the property, and Kinnaman was one of the only four actors to take their roles from the original. Despite the box office underperformance, “The Suicide Squad” is a daring, abrasive and special entry in the cannon of comic book adaptations. While David Ayer’s film was an example of everything that can be wrong when the visions of the artist and the studio compete, Gunn’s film is perhaps the biggest creative statement of his career. He combines his dark and caricatural indie background With his experience of superhero on a larger scale with Marvel Studios, creating something unequivocal.
One of the strengths of “The Suicide Squad” is the way the character of Rick Flag is considerably improved compared to the original film. Rather than playing it like a generic army guy, Joel Kinnaman gives much more personality and charm under the vision of James Gunn. We must remain grateful that Kinnaman has obtained the opportunity to buy his character after having been terribly evil evil during his first appearance of DCEU, but certainly, Tom Hardy’s thought as Rick Flag under the vision of Gunn is pretty cool to think. After all, can you imagine Hardy’s flag facing John Cena’s peacemaker?
